What size patio heaters do I need?
1. Before you decide on a product, you’ll need to judge what areas of your outdoor space you want to keep warm. For domestic spaces, this will usually be a relatively small area defined by where you prefer to sit on your patio. Commercial settings tend to require a lot more calculation to take into account all of the different spaces that customers use.
  
  Once you’ve estimated the heating area required, you should use this figure to find a product, or combination of products, with “heats up to” values sufficient to cover the space. Every patio heater in our collection specifies what size area its heat will cover in ideal conditions; however, you should round this value down if you’re intending to use the heater in a particularly exposed location where the heat will have to compete with wind-chill and harsh weather conditions. We always suggest choosing a product that’s a little higher than your requirements as this will ensure your outdoor seating areas are as well heated as possible and will be able to combat the colder temperatures felt in more exposed locations.

Why don’t all infrared heaters glow?
1. The fiery orange glow of quartz heaters is what makes these products instantly recognisable, their comforting and familiar hallmark becoming a common sight outside pubs and nightclubs. Quartz heaters give off light because they use a different type of infrared compared to panels or ceramic heaters. Quartz heaters use shortwave or near infrared, a more intense form of radiation which is close to visible light on the electromagnetic spectrum. The benefit of this type of infrared is that it feels hotter on your skin – excellent for exposed locations where it has to compete with wind-chill – but your skin actually finds this harder to absorb than gentler wavelengths. This means that for prolonged use, shortwave infrared products are less efficient and less comfortable than longwave alternatives.
  
  Ceramic heaters and panel heaters use far infrared, a wavelength which is much further away from the visible light portion of the spectrum, so these heaters do not glow when in operation. This heat feels gentler and will keep you comfortably warm over long periods of time without any discomfort. They do take a little longer to get to comfort temperatures, but once they do, they’ll provide a deeper sensation of warmth that’s pleasant and soothing. The best choice for covered outdoor areas that are occupied for long periods of time.
What are storage heaters?
1. Storage heaters are electric heaters designed to make the most of Economy tariffs by heating up overnight using cheap electricity and warming the house throughout the day. Thermally retentive bricks inside the heater body store heat overnight and release it during the day by allowing air to circulate over the bricks, carrying warmth out into the room. Room temperatures can be raised or lowered by increasing or decreasing air flow around the bricks via easy-to-use dials at the top of the heater. Once the bricks have cooled, they must be charged up again overnight before they’re ready to be used again.
How do you install wall mounted electric radiators?
1. When it comes to installing our plug in radiators, nothing could be easier. Our electric radiators can be fitted quickly and easily with only the most basic of DIY skills. We provide everything you need to fix your new purchase securely to the wall. Once you are done, simply plug into a standard 13amp socket. If you prefer a more discrete fitting, you can pay an electrician to hardwire your radiators directly into the wall.
What size patio heater do I need?
1. This can vary depending on how much of your outdoor space you use regularly. You may only need to heat a small area around a four-seater patio table or you might need effective heating for several benches and a sheltered outdoor cooking space. It’s a good idea to take stock of how you use your exterior spaces and make a note of the total area you need to keep well heated.
  
  Once you know the size of the heated area you require, you can then choose a product with an equivalent output or higher to ensure the space will be adequately warmed. All of our products have a ‘heats up to’ value in m² to help you choose the right product for your project. If you can’t find a product with the exact right heat span – don’t worry. It’s better to round up to the next available size as this will ensure that your patio spaces are kept nice and warm rather than choosing an underpowered product that’s not up to scratch.
  
  Commercial spaces are naturally harder to heat due to their size, and in these instances, it’s often easier and more effective to install multiple heaters to cover a larger area. What size radiators do I need?
1. The size of the radiators you will need depends on the size of your room, the quality of your insulation and several other factors. For standard sized rooms you can use our radiator calculator to work out the total wattage required. However, if your room has a ceiling height of over 2.7m you will need a higher wattage than the calculator recommends because you will be heating a large volume of air. Are electric heaters expensive to run?
1. It’s a myth that all electric heaters are expensive to run. More so than any other type of heating system, the term electric heaters covers a wide range of models which employ different types of technology. Many people who have gas central heating are only familiar with the cheap portable electric heaters that are used as a temporary measure during building work or in the event of a boiler malfunction. Cheaply made, inefficient and expensive to run, these heaters have given electric heating a bad name – when in fact, there are many economical alternatives available. Some electric heaters are so efficient that they can even rival central heating as an affordable home heating system, despite the higher cost of electricity.
  
  Infrared panels, for instance, are some of the most energy efficient electric heaters on the market. These panels heat purely through radiation, heating directly in the same way the sun warms the Earth, rather than heating up the air. People, objects and surfaces absorb and re-radiate this heat, so the room quickly becomes a 360° radiator, without losing heat through draughts. This makes infrared panels uniquely cheap to run. They can be used throughout the home as a stylish and economical heating system.
  
  Storage heaters are an old-school alternative to infrared panels that work in a totally different way but can still be very cheap to run. Storage heaters make use of economy tariffs by charging up overnight when electricity is cheaper and releasing heat throughout the day. They are less flexible and controllable than alternative heating systems, but if they suit your lifestyle, storage heaters can provide very cheap electric heating.
  
  Outdoors, electric patio heaters are arguably a luxury item, but if you are looking for a heat source for your back garden, you’ll find electric heaters are much cheaper to run than gas patio heaters – and they’re also safer, cleaner, and require less maintenance. Indoors, electric panel heaters are more expensive to run than electric radiators, but they are cheaper to purchase, so might work out the best choice for a room you use less often, such as a spare bedroom.
What’s the best electric radiator to use in a conservatory?
1. Electric radiators can be a good choice for conservatory heating because they can be retro-fitted without the need to extend the plumbing from your central heating system.

Are electric radiators safe to use in bathrooms?
1. As a rule, we do not recommend electric radiators for use in bathrooms. Although there are splashproof electric radiators with a high enough IP Rating to be hardwired in wet locations, very few electric radiators can be safely used to dry towels – and in bathrooms this is always the temptation!
  
  Electric towel radiators are usually a better choice for bathroom heating because they can always be installed in both Zone 2 and Zone 3, make a better use of limited bathroom space and come with the added bonus of warm, dry towels. All electric radiators and towel rails for bathroom usage must be installed by a qualified electrician.
